When I buy fancy audio equipment, it's almost an emotional decision (that is why I use my beer allowance for it ). The only USB-powered DAC-HPamp out there that isn't really limited by USB power is the Schiit Fulla2, and that's because it has one USB port for signal input from a computer and a separate USB port for power from a USB charger.Well, why people buy for 400$+++ dac/amp if they have the same sound with a integrate sound card on a motherboard ? That make no sens. On the D1 with USB vs the Magni3 wiht its own power brick, USB power from computers is limited to 5v 500mA, probably up to 1000mA on some motherboards. Modi3 runs on USB so you can have similar problems. If it can't deliver 5v 500mA, the sound will be weird, or the D1 won't even run. If the USB port it's plugged into has dirty power, then you get noise. Modi3 - Less than 0.001%, 20Hz-20KHz, at 1V RMS, less than 0.02% at 5V RMS into 32 ohms (OK so not exactly as clean as higher tier Schiit amps or Meiers and Violectrics, but hey, it's $99)ĭ1 - >110dB (Better by 2dB, but if you're hitting clipping or high THD levels pushing the D1 this won't matter)ĭ1 - 2ohms (looks like a wide gap but in practice you're not likely to have anything with less than 16ohms anyway, so this is a draw) Modi3 - (per channel output) 3W into 16ohms, 2W into 32ohms, 1.3W into 50ohms, 430mW into 300ohmsĭ1 - doesn't say, not even in max output voltage
